what is a bond by wall street survivor : A bond is a fixed income investment in which an investor loans money to an entity (corporate or governmental) that borrows the funds for a defined period of time at a fixed interest rate.First thing is first: What is a bond? As you learned in Bonds 101 - What They Are and How The Work, a bond, in its basic form, a plain vanilla bond is a type of loan. An investor takes his or her money and temporarily lends it to the bond issuer. In exchange, the investor receives interest income at a predetermined rate (the coupon rate) and at predetermined times (the coupon date). Thus a bond is a form of loan or IOU: the holder of the bond is the lender (creditor), the issuer of the bond is the borrower (debtor), and the coupon is the interest. Alternatively, some bonds are sold at a price lower than their par value in lieu of the periodic interest. Most simply, bonds represent debt obligations – and therefore are a form of borrowing. If a company issues a bond, the money they receive in return is a loan, and must be repaid over time.Bonds are either publicly traded on exchanges or sold privately between a broker and the creditor.
